Description

PUNCHING REINFORCEMENT

The weight of a slab supported on a column induces shear stresses in the slab. These stresses, if sufficient and where no additional reinforcement is provided, would result in the column ‘punching’ through the slab. This punching shear is similarly induced at the base where the column rests. Although punching shear can be mitigated by localized thickening of the concrete with support beams and enlarged column heads, flat slab construction offers many advantages. A consistent floor-to-floor height can reduce the overall height of a building and provide significant time and material savings.

Typical Arrangements

Our Shearfix system is suitable for all column shapes and locations. The layout of the Shearfix rails is determined by the design calculation or the design program. Some of the typical arrangements are shown here.

Sizes/Configurations

The Shearfix system consists of double-headed studs welded to flat channels. It is manufactured to meet the specific needs of each application. The bolts are manufactured in five diameters (10, 12, 16, 20, and 25 mm) from CARES B500C-approved reinforcing bar. The heads are hot-forged to three times the bar diameter. Bolts are manufactured in virtually any length to accommodate the slab depth, but are typically produced in 5-mm increments within the 100–1000 mm range. The bar used in this system has a characteristic yield strength of 500 N/mm². The studs are welded to the rail at centers determined by the design calculation. Shearfix rails are manufactured from steel strips, 16 mm wide x 3 mm thick for bolts up to 16 mm in diameter and 20 mm x 5 mm for the two bolt diameters. The rails have rounded ends to reduce the risk of injury during handling. The space between the strips allows concrete to flow through during pouring and also allows the rail to be nailed through spacers to the formwork when installed “from the bottom up,” that is, before any other reinforcement.
