The expansion joint is an elastomeric device that supports the relative movement between two structural elements on a bridge or road. Its main functions are:
- Allow the free movement of the plates, supporting the transmitted loads.
- Continue the road, supporting the traffic load
- To avoid noise, impacts and vibrations.
- Provide an adequate seal and allow the evacuation of water.
The expansion joints are made by an internal steel structure, designed to prevent deformation of the joint and allow a smooth transition between plates in any expansion conditions, while reducing as much as possible the loads generated in the elastomer and which are transmitted to the board fixing screws.
